It's always a pleasure to be able to highlight customers projects and achievements and this month we had the pleasure of speaking to Samantha Deverell (Managing Director) at Adtech, about their involvement with Spot® the robotic dog. The project heralded challenges and called for copious amounts of innovation - which the team delivered in full. The four-legged robot making waves in the world of hazardous environment exploration is here. This agile machine, developed by Boston Dynamics and enhanced by Createc, is no ordinary dog. Spot® can navigate treacherous terrains, climb stairs, and even open doors. But for its most daring mission yet, Spot® needed a special suit - and that's where we came in.
The Nuclear Challenge
Decommissioned nuclear sites are no walk in the park. They're filled with invisible dangers - radiation, toxic chemicals, and other hazardous materials. Sending humans into these environments is risky, making Spot® an ideal explorer. But even our robotic friend needs protection. The challenge? Create a contamination jacket that allows Spot® to move freely while keeping him safe from harmful substances.
Our Solution
Enter our cutting-edge PVC contamination jacket. This isn't your average raincoat. Our team developed a 3-dimensional jacket that offers:
- Flexibility for Spot's® complex movements
- Durability to withstand harsh environments
- Easy decontamination for repeated use
- Perfect fit to prevent any contamination seepage
From prototype to final product, we tailored this jacket to meet Spot's® unique needs, proving that even robots can have bespoke wardrobes!
The science bit...
Our secret weapon? High-frequency welding. This technique allowed us to create strong, leak-proof seams in the PVC material. By using electromagnetic energy to fuse the PVC molecules, we ensured that Spot's jacket could stand up to the toughest conditions. This isn't just about dressing up a robot dog. Our work with Spot® and Createc is paving the way for safer, more efficient handling of hazardous environments. From nuclear decommissioning to disaster response, this technology could help protect human lives and speed up critical operations.
